Sam was looking over maps for the five thousandth time. He had been in here for hours now, studying the maps and charting possible ways their enemies could attack. On the table in front of him was a bunch of maps, detailing the area around the camp. On a board behind him was another map, this one pinned up and covered in tacks and string connecting to tacks. Marker covered the map it would probably seem like one big mess to anybody who wasn't Sam. But there was a method to his madness. The map detailed possible points of attack, weak spot in the barrier, spots the enemy could focus on, how to best utilize their forces to best defend against potential attacks. Sam had plotted expanding their borders, he was thinking about some kind of warning system to put in place.
Sam had been up since the crack of dawn drawing up battle plans and trying to help the camp. He had trouble sleeping knowing how woefully unprepared they were for an attack. Sam stressed about it often, he was once the only army commander and felt the overwhelming need to be a leader. Now he had help, but still he needed to become the guy everybody relied on. He saw the way Ben looked at Angel, he wanted.... no he needed people to look at him like that, cause that meant he had gained their trust and loyalty.
Right now Sam was waiting to see if he had played his cards right. He had tried to befriend Ben, tried to befriend Angel, if he got the respect of the Roman brass he'd have the respect of half the camp. Most of the Greeks didn't have a problem with him, they did however have beef with the Romans. To unit the two halves of the camps army he'd decided to gain the Romans respect first. But then again Respect wasn't the same as loyalty. What ever, he was making strides. All the Romans needed was for him to prove he was worthy to lead them, the Greeks.... They didn't doubt his ability they just didn't like Romans and were stubborn. So how was he supposed to win them over? He could try just talking to him but the best way was for them to befriend some of the Romans, that way they'd have something to fight for.
Thinking about it just gave Sam a migraine. He was planning battle strategy, not trying to fix the problems his soldiers had with each other. At least that's not what he was doing at the moment. The whole reason he had some in here was to calm himself down and give him some peace and quiet away from prying eyes. In here he didn't have to be the better man, in here he had nothing to prove.
Sam was looking over some more possible angels they could be attacked from. The options seemed endless, the renegade camps moved around way to much to be tracked and the titan camp was.... where was it? Some where in the south he knew that much. He was planning a way to counter another possible attack route when he realized that left the right side of camp open. Sam let an F bomb fly quite audibly, and swatted a cup full of pens and other mapping equipment off the table. This was frustrating to him. He didn't know how many soldiers he had, and he didn't want to split the Greek and Roman armies up. The whole point was uniting them, splitting the up just weakened their over all force. He needed to find some kind of middle ground with Roman and Greek combat strategies. But what?

Adelaide had seen enough fighting to last a lifetime. She could remember when she first make it to Camp Jupiter. She fit in so well, so easily. The drills and the training came as naturally to her as breathing did. She would spend nights and days studying formations and testing them out in practice for weeks before war games. She and her other Centurion were one of the best and rarely beaten. There was no better feeling in the world than leading troops and using plans to outsmart and overpower your enemy. That was...until it became real.
There was a huge difference in leading attacks in theory and practice and leading them into true battle. There was nothing that could prepare you for the real thing. The cries of agony and pain, the overwhelming smell of blood and cannon smoke, the sight of those you cared about dying mere inches from you. She had been one of the ones to lead the attack against the Greeks and her skill with her powers had made her a force to be reckoned with.
That was in the past though and she still found it hard to believe that the two forces were joining sides to defeat an even worst enemy. She hadn't like the idea of joining hands with the camp that brought hers to it's knees, but they had no other choice. If they didn't want the whole demigod world to come crashing down they needed to fight this together.
It hadn't been long at this new camp and Adelaide was elected as an Army commander. There had been one from the Greek side while she represented the Romans. She hadn't met the other guy yet, but she had heard that he was skilled in doing their job. She hoped for the sake of it all that they could put aside their differences and figure this thing out. It wasn't going to be easy that was for sure but they had no other choice.
Adelaide had opened the flap to the tent at the exact moment a pencil holder went flying along with a word that was better off not said. She raised her eyebrow as she glanced around the tent. There were maps, charts and countless other things littering the area. She cleared her throat and stepped fully into the tent , her shoulders square and back. She extended her hand out to him " I'm Adelaide Clark, daughter of Jupiter and your fellow Army Commander. I see we've got some work to do."
Adi had just been elected, Romans tended to mull over things a bit more seriously than the Greeks and she planned on making up for lost time as soon as possible. They were still at war and this guy and herself were the ones expected to lead them all. || WORD COUNT: 483 || OUTFIT: HERE || NOTES: YAY Meeting! || TAGS: @jaybee1 || || template designed by NEMO of adoxography ||

Okay. Sam was not expecting Adelaide to walk in right when he had his little fit of rage. So much for a good first impression. He looked up at her, a clam look in his eye. Damn she was hot. He knew it wasn't the most professional thought but it was the first one that popped into his teenage head. She was blond, which he liked, she looked like an authority figure, which he also liked. Sam couldn't hardly stand weak people, at least not in his place of work. Okay, yea she was hot. But she was also oh so very Roman. Her introduction, the way she held herself. Roman. Sam stood up straight and looked her in the eye, he had to redeem himself somehow. He couldn't read her, or it was hard for him to do so. She had the same look that he often saw in himself when he looked into a mirror, she was battle hardened and had seen terrible things.
He sighed and decided it'd be better to speak now. "It's nice to finally put a face to the women I've heard so much about... I'm Samuel Smith, son of Ares and your fellow army commander" He really should stop trying to be Roman. Back at Camp Half Blood a simple 'sup' would have sufficed. But now he was army commander and had to act like it. He held her gaze, she seemed to be judging him. Sam could guess what she was probably thinking 'him? He's so young, what are his credentials!?" He got that from literally everybody he talked to. He didn't liked being looked down on because of his age, or because he was Greek. But at this camp he got a whole lot of both.
Sam didn't want him and Adelaide to come into conflict, he also didn't want her treating him as if he were a common soldier. They were supposed to be partners, and Sam planned to act like they were on the same level. She was a child of the big three, and was well respected among the Roman campers, but he figured it'd be better if he acted like himself now rather then later. "Sorry for my..... outburst. Just a little frustrated, been working on this stuff since before you were even enlisted so I'm glad to finally get some help" Sam walked from around the table and squatted down, picking up the cup and the tools that were scattered all over the floor.
Sam stood up and placed the cup back on the table, then looked around at all of HIS maps. That was a problem, they were his not theirs. He had been so absorbed in his work that he hadn't stopped to think about how his co-commander might like things. Normally Romans tended to be more crisp, so his whole array of strings , tacks, and marker probably wasn't going to fly. And just because it made sense to him didn't mean it would to everybody else. "So uh, I've obviously been busy, and I'd like your thoughts on some things. And by some I mean a lot...."

Adelaide was a bit surprised at how young the guy was. Not that it really mattered. If she had come to learn anything from the war it was that courage and leadership did not discriminate by age. She herself had seen a grown son of Mars drop his weapons on the battle ground, refusing to fight, scared out of his mind while a younger child of Mercury raced into battle head first, never pausing once for his own safety. Odd things happened during war and if he was the best to lead on the Greek side then she was more than willing to work with him.
When the guy introduce himself and shook her hand she wasn't too surprised to learn he was a son of Ares. She had figured it'd be a son of Ares or a child of the big three that she would be working with. When he mentioned it was good to put a face to the talk he'd heard about her though she laughed a bit " Well I hope it was flattering, or at least something I can live up to." There was no telling what talk was going around camp. War tended to bring out the worst in people and sometimes talk could be unrelentingly cruel ( which she really didn't care about if people were speaking about her) or absurdly wild ( such as a Roman taking on a whole platoon of Greeks single-handedly).
Adelaide listened to him apologize for his outburst and she shook her head " No need to apologize, we're in charge of people's lives I'd be more worried if you weren't emotional about this all." She walked to one of the walls where the overview of camp was and looked over it briefly. She had requested similar maps once she had been chosen as co-commander though hers hadn't arrived yet. She could note a few holes in the current situation, but now wasn't quite the time. She wanted to make sure they were on the same page, wanted to make sure this was going to work. If your commanders weren't on the same team then your troops would know it in a heartbeat. Dissension and attitudes came directly from leadership. She turned to face Same before speaking again " Speaking of help....Where I'm from we have two leaders for everything. Two Praetors, Two Centurions, Two Legionnaires. They're equals and they work together like a well-oiled machine. I know you and I are very different and we're not going to see eye to eye on a lot of things but I feel it's important that we respect one another, that we present a united force. If we show them that you and I have each other's backs, each other's respect then they'll fall in line too."
Adelaide wasn't sure how keen he was to work with a Roman, but if he wasn't willing to put their differences aside then none of this was going to work. When Sam mentioned he wanted her opinion on a few things she nodded briefly " Alright, let's see what you've got so far."

So Adelaide seemed nice enough. She didn't judge him, or well she did just not vocally. She had some form of a sense of humor, be it she was Roman so that'd be hard to hit multiple times in a row. But what ever, she looked eager to get along so Sam wasn't going to mess that up. "You'll probably surpass my expectations. I tend to keep my standards low now a days, you know to avoid being disappointed. Not that you're disappointing in any way, just you know..... policy I guess?" Sam explained tapping his thigh nervously. Once again Sam felt the need to be better, compared to her he was sloppy. He was wearing some jeans, a black t-shirt and basketball sneakers. She had a whole outfit that was crisp and clean, is stuff was wrinkly and dirty. His hair was a mess, and he hadn't slept in several days, he also was high on coffee like all of the time now and he was starting to think he had a problem.
"I guess you're right about that..... though I don't think showing to much emotion is a good idea, we always gotta be the ones not effected you know? Somebody the camp can look up to, so I don't like letting them see any..... I guess human sides of me? I gotta stay strong and be the one they can rely on you know? So uh when I'm alone sometimes I like to unwind..... if it bothers you I'll take it somewhere else" Okay, so maybe all that was a little unnecessary. Just because him and her would be working close together doesn't mean he had to give her his self diagnosis of why he did what he did. He doubted she wanted to hear all that anyway, but he planned on being her friend more then just her co commander. If he and Adelaide could get along maybe some of the camper would start to not give each other death glares. Of course everything wasn't about the camp, if he was friends with her it'd make there job so much easier.
Adelaide then spoke, and same couldn't have agreed more. She was so elegant in her wording, yet so precise in her message, Sam tended to be one or the other. "I couldn't agree more, and I want to work with you. Being the only commander has made me appreciate other peoples help. And since your hear now well, I could use all I can get. So uh, yeah. Let's set a good example for the camp....." Sam didn't really have that much he could say to her. She had said it all and at this point they should get right into it, reforming plans and making new ones on just how their army would work. At the moment their machine was more of a pile of scrap metal waiting to be put together, but the potential was there. Sam had drawn up lists, and studied days on end on what their middle ground should be, maybe he'd actually find one today. "Okay so uh, excuse the mess. Just a lot of maps and stuff, you know battle strategy and what not. If you want to look them over you can but it's awfully.... for lack of a better word Greek so uh.... we can always re make them? I can make a legend or we can just start over, either way it's fine. But uh..... should we begin with where our middle ground is then?"

Adelaide listened to him speaking, raising her eyebrows slightly as he spoke about making it a policy to be let down. She couldn't imagine thinking that way. That kind of thinking was so against the Roman way of life that she at first thought he might have been joking. Why expect to be let down? Why not demand perfection? Ok, so perfection wasn't going to happen of course, but as a leader you should demand as close to it as your troops could get. Perfection was the difference in losing a few men in battle and losing a whole legion. Then again, he was Greek and from what she had seen so far they didn't care much about what their leaders wanted of them. They mainly cared for themselves. They voiced their own opinions and did what they wanted, it was madness. Adelaide gave a tight smile before replying " Well, we'll certainly have to change that."
When Sam spoke about not letting his emotions show she found herself nodding a bit. That was the closest thing he had said so far that mimicked her way of thinking. He was right, they could not show emotion. As leaders they were expected to be immune to petty things like fear and sorrow. They had to think of the whole Army they commanded, not one person, not one emotion. Once you began to let emotions into the battlefield you began to slip and slipping costs lives." I agree. Unfortunately it's a burden we have to shoulder...to appear immune to all of this, but we are humans, well...half-humans. We're not machines, and it will affect us...I don't mind you releasing it in here, I think it's the best place for it actually. I think in here we need to be as honest as we can both with each other and with this war." She herself hadn't needed to get anything off her chest, she had made peace with the losses months ago, though the pain of losing her brother still caught her off guard every now and then she was a pro at keeping herself in check around the others.
Adelaide nodded when Sam agreed they should set a good example for the others. Maybe if the two of them could get along then campers might be more at ease. When he mentioned the maps and mess she didn't take any mind to any of it. She figured it would be this way. Sam had been by himself for a while and she figured cleaning wasn't at the top of his to-do list. She sat down at the table and pulled a piece of nearby paper that didn't have any marks on it. She began speaking as she wrote. "Right. I believe our first line of action should be training. All the scouting won't make any difference if we can't properly defend ourselves." She began making a list
Repellere equites iacere pila cuneum formate contendite vestra sponte orbem formate testudinem formate
Pausing a moment she looked up at him " These are basic commands for our most successful tactics." Sliding the paper over to him she spoke again " How about you write down some of yours and we'll go from there, decide which moves we can integrate, which moves would be easiest to pick up by both sides." It was odd talking to a Greek about Roman battle moves, but yet...here they were.
